The lyrics for This Wheel’s on Fire, originally recorded by Bob Dylan for The Basement Tapes, are, to me anyway, a perfect example of how a real troubadour preserves the lore about sacred sex magic in song, via the use of metaphor.
This wheel’s on fire, rolling down the road, refers to the orbiting circle of chi energy that creates enormous heat, so much so that semi-naked yogis have been found, sitting high up in the mountains of Tibet, at the centre of feet-wide circles of melted ice and snow.
Best notify my next of kin, this wheel shall explode, refers to the explosion of lights in the head that accompany spiritual enlightenment, and thus frees generations of our next of kin — our ancestors and descendants —from having to be reborn on the Wheel of Karma.
But let me start from the beginning …
You will probably know of the practice of revolving the circle of fire or chi in the body, known as the Microcosmic Orbit. But what you may not know is that…
- What we’ve been taught, so far, about the Microcosmic Orbit only works for men. Women have a different astral anatomy and physiology, which I’ll explain anon.
- Practising the Microcosmic Orbit outside of sacred sexual practices is for the birds…
One very wise person once said that if you want to know your Maker, go back to what Made you. But that means wiping away the shadows of guilt around sex that have accrued over thousands of years of indoctrination. It is hard for us now to imagine a world in which loving intimacy that leads to enlightenment is not only encouraged but built into the structure of society itself, with, say geishas, courtesans, consorts, concubines and sing-song girls all knowing their various specific functions and all happily playing their officially-sanctioned roles.
It is unfortunate nowadays that most of what is taught in Taoist Tantric sex teachings comes from male monks, since female practitioners were driven underground, with their precious secrets, a long time ago.
“Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus” isn’t just a clever book title. There are times when it’s as if men and women are not just from different planets, but from completely opposite and antithetic solar systems. Our bodies are not the same, our brains are wired differently, our emotional responses run in diametrically-opposite directions…. and so it stands to reason that our chi or fire would circulate along differing routes.
What I’m about to explain here (and in the upcoming new book) comes in part from fragments of old texts you can dig out from the Internet Archive, but mainly from my own experience. Trust me, once you get these wheels of fire rollin’ down the road, your heating bills will plummet and your health and vitality will improve no end, no matter your age.
In the Tibetan Vajrayana system, it’s known as Duma or Tummo heat…and here Wikipedia tells us more.
Duma heat is a phonetic rendering of the Tibetan word Tummo (or g-tummo), which translates to “inner fire” or “psychic heat”. It is an advanced, ancient meditation and yoga practice within Vajrayana Buddhism that focuses on generating heat within the body.
Scientific studies have explored the effects of tummo, demonstrating body temperatures up to 38.3 °C (100.9 °F.) in general and by over 8 °C (46 °F) in body extremities together with increased activation of the default mode network of the brain, metabolism and thermal power output among expert meditators.
While the practice’s effects on body temperature have been investigated, its primary purpose within Tibetan Buddhism remains focused on spiritual development, combining visualisation, breath, and meditation to harness the inner fire and achieve profound states of enlightenment.
So first, we need to sort out the sexes.
The male’ s wheel of fire (Microcosmic Orbit) runs up from the ball sac, up the back to the crown of the head, and then down the front of the body.
The female’s, however, runs in a circle around the head and body like a clock face. Its apex crosses the crown of the head, and its furthest point runs through the perineum.
So here are FIVE SIMPLE STEPS for getting your wheels of fire rolling.
- Although this practice is referred to as sacred sex, it is actually fired up by love and adoration. The love is unconditional and the greater it is, the more the “wheels on fire” are activated.
- While making love, use the breath to get the fire wheel activated. It works just as well, in the quantum entanglement way, if you’re dreaming or imagining your lover.
- On the out breath, pull up the anus. This contraction of the muscles contains (cultivates) the fire (chi) and pushes it up and on its way.
- Soon you will likely feel twitching in various parts of the body as the fire (chi) pushes through blockages — road blocks if you like, as it goes “rollin’ down the road”. Your hips may shake and roll from side-to-side. You may find yourself at times wriggling like a snake trying to discard its skin as you get hotter and hotter (and throw off the quilt!).
- At the crown, the fire chi is fanned by inner ‘winds’ into a forest fire and we get to the part about “best notify my next of kin, this wheel shall explode’”. What feels like drops of nectar (bindus) drip down inside the brain, and eventually lead to an explosion of light, or a “thousand swinging lanterns”. It is utterly blissful and ecstatic. I would say orgasmic, but it’s a much more powerful experience than the ordinary orgasm. At these times, I’ve found it is helpful to visualise the bindu, the seed symbol, of Ham.

There will be a lot more about sacred sexual practices and techniques from various traditions in my new book, which I hope to have out by Spring next year. In the meantime…
