The moon for March is known nowadays as the Worm Moon. However, the roots of the moon names are lost “in the mists of time”, as they say. So after some discussion, we came to the view that this March moon was most probably named after the Old English/Saxon for ‘dragon’ which is ‘wyrm’, as it is known in the 10th century epic Beowulf, and that the common-or-garden worm was named after its mightier mythical ancestor.
Both worms and wyrms are associated with fertility, which is perfect for this time of year, when everything is getting ready to burst forth into bloom.
The vital role of the humble garden worm in fertilising the soil cannot be overstated. But it is not so well known that the killing of the wyrm or “dread dawn flier” by mythological dragon slayers was also symbolic of fertility and growth. This wyrm is the challenger along the path, blocking the hero’s way in his rite-of-passage quest of trials around the zodiac, and he cannot go forward until the wyrm is disposed of.
So here it is, and we hope you like it!
